| Southeastern Fisheries Association
announces the launching of the Integrity Award program. This program
awards restaurants for "doing the right thing" by serving customers
the fish that is actually advertised on their menu.
This whole
issue is about telling the truth and letting the consumer decide. If
fish ordered is the fish served, there would be no controversy and
cost to government and industry would be greatly reduced.
In every
investigative report over the past year, when seafood is bought from
a restaurant and sent off for DNA testing, results indicate
more than 50% of the fish being sold for grouper is not
grouper. Species of fish being substituted for grouper include
emperor fish, escolar, painted sweet lips, basa, panga, tra,
tilapia, Pollock and perch. Some of the fake fish cannot even be
identified.
Any
member of SFA that would like to nominate a restaurant for the Award
can contact Bob Jones at
Bobfish@aol.com for details. The Award is not available to any
restaurant cited in the last 24 months for serving fake fish.
Restaurants cited for their
Integrity are listed here along with a write up. |
